Here is a basic guide to becoming a Christian or follower of Jesus Christ.
Becoming a Christian involves you personally trusting in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and committing to follow him as Lord. This personal desire for transformation is initiated by the Holy Spirit of God speaking to your heart and calling you to follow Jesus. Your next steps are to understand your need for God, repent of sins (turn away from ungodly, destructive behaviors), and accept by faith that Jesus died for your sins and rose again.
Key Steps to Becoming a Christian
- Recognize Your Need: Acknowledge that you have sinned and are separated from God, recognizing your need for a Savior.
- Believe in Jesus: Believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who died on the cross to pay for your sins and was raised from the dead.
- Repent (Turn from Sin):
Repentance means choosing to turn away from a life of sin and, instead, agreeing with God and following His ways
- Confess Jesus as Lord: Confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus is the Lord and King of your life.
- Pray and Receive Forgiveness: Initiate a relationship with God through prayer, asking for forgiveness and inviting Him to guide your life.
Taking the Next Steps
- Bible Study: Begin reading the Bible, such as the Gospel of John, to understand Jesus’ life and teachings.
- Community and Fellowship: Find a local church or community of believers for support, encouragement, and to learn together.
- Baptism: Undergo baptism, which is a public declaration of your faith and a symbol of dying to your old life and being raised to a new life in Christ.
- Baptism in the Holy Spirit: pray for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, or find a fellowship where believers will lay hands on you for this life-changing baptism.
- Prayer and Growth: Cultivate a daily, personal, and ongoing conversation with God, which is known as a life of prayer.
